I am often asked what is a Community Interest Community (CIC) when I introduce myself and this is what I do. So I will attempt to answer this question in this post.

A Community Interest Company (CIC) is a special kind of business designed to benefit the community. Unlike regular businesses that are focused on making profit for their owners or shareholders, a CIC exists to serve a social purpose. The idea behind a CIC is that they use their profits and assets to support the community, improve people’s lives, and/or tackle social problems. CICs are closely regulated to ensure they stay true to their social goals, and we have to stay accountable to our Board of Directors.

KEY POINTS:

  • We are ‘Not-for-profit’: A CIC uses its profits for the community, not for private gain.
  • We make ‘Social Impact’: A CIC focuses on making a positive impact in areas like education, health, the environment, or poverty alleviation – and often, a mixture of these.
  • There has to be some kind of ‘Community Benefit’: The main aim of a CIC is to benefit the local community or specific groups, such as people in need or marginalized populations.

Diamonds Community Learning Project CIC is a Social Enterprise (or part of the Third Sector) and we are based in the West Midlands, serving in both Coventry and Birmingham.

We are dedicated to empowering local communities through learning, skills development, and support services. We focus on making education and life skills accessible, and welcome all, particularly for marginalized groups (such as, new to English learners, those who struggle with using the internet, domestic violence survivors, neuro-divergent individuals, and families in need).

We do this by:-

  • Offering Tailored Learning: We offer community-based educational programs, such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, Digital Skills sessions, Cooking Classes, and a range of workshops designed to meet the unique needs of our participants, and constantly changing!
  • Working Collaboratively: We work with different community partners in the two cities, including local Schools, Community Centres, Food Hubs and Food Banks, Charities, and other organizations. Our primary goal is to ensure that we reach the people who need our services the most.
  • Supporting Vulnerable Groups: Our work is about helping people who need them to gain the skills and confidence to improve their lives. We currently teach people from any country around the world who want to learn English, survivors of domestic violence, neurodivergent families, older adults, and we are open to welcoming anyone who wants to join our friendly classes.
  • Creating a Caring and Nurturing Environment: It is crucial to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for our participants, where they can feel valued, learn new skills, and engage in their community.

In Summary –

Diamonds Community Learning Project CIC’s primary passion is to empower individuals with education to equip them to succeed and thrive. We do this through community engagement in order to make a real difference in people’s lives. We want everyone to thrive and support them to do so, and so ensuring that everyone has access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.
